The Selbyville Police Department offers the seminars listed below to any interested business both within the Town of
Selbyville and the surrounding areas. The seminars are held during our annual Business Safety Seminar Program,
or they can be conducted on-site at the requesting business. The programs are taught by experienced officers who
have received specialized training in the topic area.

Monthly Crime Statistics Report
The Selbyville Police Department currently services an area of approx. 9 square miles, 8 miles west of the
Atlantic Ocean, sitting on the Mason Dixon line with the State of Maryland as our Southern boundary. The
jurisdiction is dissected with US Route 113 running North & South, and State Routes 17 & 54 running East &
West proving access to the beach resorts to our East.
The jurisdiction consists of several thousand people of varied cultures and nationalities working in or around the
numerous golf courses, resort business, nurseries, farms, or local poultry plants. The jurisdiction also contains
three schools with a combined student population of nearly 2500 student in pre-school through 8th grade, as
well as the Indian River School District Administrative Offices.
Annually, we respond to approx. 3000 calls for service, 150 traffic collisions, and process approx. 500 criminal
arrests a year. We are the only municipal agency in southern Delaware that currently houses an Intoxilyzer (for
testing blood alcohol), a Video Phone, and a Live Scan Unit. The Video Phone, allows officers to prisoners to be
seen from out Department holding area, without having to transport them 18 miles to the closest 24 hour
Magistrate Court. The Live Scan unit allows for digital input and search of mugshots and fingerprints to both the
State Bureau of Identification & the Federal Bureau of Investigation
The Department currently consists of full-time and part-time officers, rotating 12 hour shifts. All full-time officers
are assigned a take-home patrol unit, equipped with a radar unit, mobile data terminal, in-car video, "Stop
Sticks", evidence collection and testing equipment and basic first aid equipment. On duty units carry an
Automatic External Defibrillator (A.E.D.) for response to cardiac emergencies. The Department is dispatches
through an in house dispatch center & through the county wide Emergency Operation Center which is
responsible for the three State Police Troops (# 4, 5, & 7) as well as the 18 municipal agencies in the county.
The Department currently operates Dodge Charger's, Chevy Tahoe’s & Ford SUV’s for normal duty, Trek
Mountain bikes, and a Ford F-350 & Military Humvee for foul weather in addition to a Special Response Vehicle.
Departmental Operations
EACH APPLICANT IS REQUIRED TO PROVIDE A PERSONAL HISTORY STATEMENT
The applicant is responsible for showing the requested documents to the investigator / interviewer and also for
providing a photocopy of each original document. The investigator will review the documents with you at the time of the
interview. Failure to produce the requested documents will result in a delay of processing your application or possible
rejection from the process.

CERTIFICATE OF BIRTH, HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, COLLEGE DIPLOMA ( IF APPLICABLE), OFFICIAL
TRANSCRIPTS – HIGH SCHOOL AND/OR COLLEGE DD214 FOR EACH PERIOD OF MILITARY SERVICE,
NATURALIZATION CERTIFICATE ANY COURT ORDERS: DIVORCE, BANKRUPTCY, CHILD SUPPORT, NAME
CHANGE, ORDER OF JUDGMENT, LEGAL SEPARATION, ETC., DRIVER’S LICENSE, SOCIAL SECURITY CARD.

Application for Employment
The Selbyville Police Department was created by Town Charter on March 5, 1931 and was tasked with the
“protection of persons and property, as well maintaining public peace, preventing crime, and promoting
public morals.”
Originally, and for many years there after, only one officer was responsible for patrolling the business
district east of the railroad tracks and the commercial area around the railroad. The officer was also
responsible for operating and maintaining the town's water treatment plant. This responsibility continued
on as the job of the Police Chief until the mid 1960s. For more info...
A Brief Departmental History
Within the Selbyville Museum you will find the Selbyville Police Department Museum. Initially started as display of
several pieces of antique equipment and newspaper articles for the Town’s Old Timers’ Day Festival in 2005, the
display grew quickly during the preparation for the Department’s 75th Anniversary in 2006. Officers searched for
articles and photos from the local newspaper dating back to 1938. Also, all previous officers that could be located
we contacted for photos and stories.
Initially we focused on the history of our Police Department, but quickly decided to expand to surrounding small
Departments and officers.
Our displays include any historical item that we came across, handcuffs, batons, evidence collection items,
photos, etc. We also searched out Departments that were in the process of disposing of old equipment to try to
obtain items that we did not have. We continually solicit items from the public and visitors who may have relatives
who were officers, are retired officers, other small Departments, etc. Also, we encourage visitors write about
stories they may have about an incident or of officer that they knew.
